Environmental Therapy Checklist for Interior Design Professionals

Writer: Grasiela Mancini Grasiela Mancini

Hi, dear vibrant soul!!!

Interior design goes far beyond aesthetics. It has the power to influence the energy of the space and, consequently, the well-being of its residents.

Professionals who wish to integrate more conscious approaches into their projects can rely on techniques such as Feng Shui , Vastu Shastra , Wabi-Sabi and others , which balance the energy of the environment and promote health, functionality and harmony.

With this in mind, I decided to develop a reference to help you start applying these concepts to your projects, so I created a comprehensive Environmental Therapy Checklist , aimed at interior professionals who want to incorporate these concepts into their projects in a practical and effective way.

1️⃣ Initial Space Assessment

Before any change, it is essential to understand the energy of the environment and the client's goals.

🔹 Mapping the energies

  • Identify the central points of balance, such as Tai Chi in Feng Shui or Brahmasthan in Vastu Shastra.

  • Analyze whether there is stagnant energy or subtle blockages that affect the fluidity of the space.

🔹 Understand the structure of the place

  • Size and proportion of rooms.

  • Quality of natural light and ventilation.

  • Presence of physical or energetic barriers (poorly positioned furniture, disorganization, closed corridors).

🔹 Client goals

  • What is he looking for? More harmony, productivity, creativity, tranquility?

  • Which style resonates most with your essence (minimalism, rustic, natural, modern)?

2️⃣ Organization and Energy Flow

🔹 Functional Positioning

  • Avoid blocked hallways or furniture that interrupts the flow of energy.

  • Leave the center of the environment free , promoting balance and expansion.

🔹 Balance of the Five Elements (Feng Shui & Vastu) Each element must be present in the environment to create harmony:

Wood – Represents growth (plants, wooden furniture).

Fire – Symbolizes energy and motivation (lighting, candles).

Earth – Stability and safety (ceramics, stones).

Metal – Mental clarity and precision (metallic objects).

Water – Flow and renewal (fountains, mirrors).

🔹 Avoid Stagnant Energy

  • Rearrange heavy furniture to allow for a more natural flow.

  • Use light colors in small spaces to increase the perception of space.

3️⃣ Aesthetic and Emotional Integration

🔹 Incorporate Wabi-Sabi

  • Appreciate imperfection and nature – handcrafted pieces, rustic textures and aged materials add authenticity to the space.

  • Opt for a soft, earthy color palette to create a welcoming, balanced environment.

🔹 Adapt the decoration to the client's energy

  • Each object has an energetic meaning. Encourage the use of pieces that bring back good memories and positive emotions.

  • Avoid excessive decoration to avoid creating a feeling of mental heaviness.

4️⃣ Nature and Sustainability

Connection with nature is essential for a healthy and balanced environment.

🔹 Plants for purification and vital energy

  • Ferns and Peace Lilies to purify the air.

  • Lavender and Rosemary for a calming and restorative vibe.

🔹 Sustainable and natural materials

  • Wood, cotton, linen and stone are options that provide comfort and harmony.

  • Choose furniture and objects from sustainable or recycled sources.

🔹 Taking advantage of natural light

  • Use light curtains to allow sunlight in.

  • Position mirrors to reflect lighting and increase the feeling of space.

5️⃣ Energy Correction of the Environment

🔹 Feng Shui Techniques

  • Mirrors : well positioned, they amplify energy and unblock stagnant areas.

  • Colors : Activate different areas of the Bagua. Example:

    • Green 🍃 – Growth and health.

    • Red 🔥 – Energy and success.

    • Blue 🌊 – Serenity and concentration.

🔹 Corrections by Vastu Shastra

  • Align your bed and work desk with auspicious directions.

  • Use crystals and yantras to transmute dense energies.

6️⃣ Creating a Sensory-Friendly Space

🔹 Aromas and Lighting

  • Essential oils such as lavender and orange help to harmonize the energy of the space.

  • Opt for warm, soft lights to create a more relaxing environment.

🔹 Textures and Sounds

  • Mix cozy textures like shag rugs, soft pillows, and natural wood.

  • Incorporate relaxing sounds, such as water fountains or soft music.

7️⃣ Space Maintenance and Evolution

Environments need to be updated as the client’s life changes.

🔹 Stay organized

  • Too many objects can overload the energy of the home. Encourage detachment and constant renewal.

  • Use dividers and organizers to reduce visual noise.

🔹 Periodically reassess the energy of the space

  • Adjust furniture, colors and objects according to the client's life stage.

8️⃣ Holistic Integration

Each philosophy contributes uniquely to the project:

Vastu Shastra provides the energetic structure and alignment.

Feng Shui optimizes the distribution of energy and elements in space.

Wabi-Sabi brings natural beauty and comfort to the environment.

The combination of these techniques creates more balanced, healthy and harmonious spaces , promoting physical, mental and energetic well-being.
